The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced on September 15 that it has awarded over $87 million in funding to upgrade technology at 1,310 health centers in every U.S. state and territory. The funding will come from the Affordable Care Act's Community Health Center (CHC) Fund, which was extended by the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) of 2015.

In HHS's press release, Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell said, "This investment will help unlock health care data and put it to work, improving health outcomes and building a better health care system for the American people."

HHS most recently awarded $36 million in July to 50 Health Center Controlled Networks to improve electronic information sharing among more than 1,020 health centers, and $260 million in May to 290 health centers for renovation or construction to expand capacity.

Health centers provide care to more than 24 million people in the U.S., irrespective of their ability to pay
