A wide array of companies are now vying for streaming rights for sporting events. Internet players are quickly catching on to the power of online distribution to reach an audience that is growing more and more accustomed to new ways to view content.

Sports content "has been, at times, the crown jewel for television networks in terms of what keeps people watching," said Lori Landew of Fox Rothschild LLP. "If you are a sports fan and you want to watch games that are happening ... it is the thing that keeps people buying particular packages. ... Everybody sees that who is a distributor of any kind of content realizes that it is a great way to get viewers and customers and attract ad dollars."

Many entertainment attorneys are not surprised by the surge of competition in sports streaming due to its potential of attracting massive amounts of advertising and loyal sports fans to company websites.

"I think it is recognizing that they have already succeeded in terms of how to reach lots of people and how to create a network among all of their users, and now with that kind of access they have to consider what else they can do with it," Landew said. "Especially, because even within the access they have, they have to consider what is going to keep them relevant to their users because there is always going to be that next flavor of the week that is going to come along."
