Jersey City is in the process of mandating a change which will require small businesses with fewer than 10 employees to, "provide workers with up to 24 hours of paid sick time and up to 16 hours of unpaid sick time annually."

If small businesses do not adhere to the paid sick time mandate, they may receive a non-compliance fine of up to $2000 for each individual infraction.

According to Fox Rothschild Partner Christina Stoneburner, some small businesses are finding it difficult to comply with the desired changes. The law becomes even more strenuous when considering businesses outside of Jersey City must adhere to the law as well. When conducting business inside of the city's boundaries, companies must compensate their works for a fraction of the mandated time.

"As the law's being revisited by the city there hasn't necessarily been some consideration of very real logistic problems of tracking and accruing sick leave," she said.
