SGR's Marsha Ajhar, New York counsel in the firm's intellectual property practice, recently began her second term as president of the International Intellectual Property Society (IIPS).
The IIPS is an organization of intellectual property lawyers with the mission of educating its members on a wide-range of laws, issues and trends that affect intellectual property. Formed in the 1960s in New York by a handful of patent attorneys, the IIPS has grown exponentially over the years and now holds monthly meetings on a wide range of subjects including best practices for computer based patent claims, academic tech transfer, 3D printing, advertising, patent and trademark protection in South America and Japan, and copyright issues in music. Additionally, the IIPS holds observer status in meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and co-hosts a World Intellectual Property Day event with WIPO at its New York headquarters annually.
Ajhar's practice focuses on trademark and copyright clearance and counseling, prosecution of domestic and international applications and maintenance of registrations, IP transfers and licensing, and litigation. She has represented a wide variety of clients in the litigation of intellectual property causes before numerous federal courts including trademark and copyright infringement claims, unfair competition and false advertising as well as appeals, opposition and cancellation proceedings before the U.S. Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. Her experience extends to product branding, trademark clearance, IP-based transactions, portfolio management and domain name disputes. She represents clients in the apparel, food and beverage, sports and entertainment, and computer and information technology fields. Ajhar received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from Simmons College and her Juris Doctor from Vermont Law School.
