Sony Pictures Entertainment has reached an undisclosed settlement agreement to resolve a class action lawsuit brought by former employees who had their personal data stolen in last year's massive cyberattack.
The original suit alleged that Sony did not secure its computer systems, servers and databases, and did not protect confidential employee information, including health insurance records and Social Security numbers.
"Once the judge decided that the plaintiffs here had standing to bring the case, that may well have incentivized Sony to think about settling," said Scott Vernick, a noted privacy attorney.
Vernick noted that it was "a little surprising" that the parties agreed on a settlement this early, given the scope of the claims.
