The National Labor Relations Board paved the way for subcontractors and possibly franchise workers to organize and negotiate not only with the companies that cut their checks, but also with the bigger companies that are contracting for their services in the first place.

Over the past few decades businesses have used and flourished off of this system, but now franchises like fast-food restaurants are concerned about how the decision may impact their futures.

"It flies in the face of economic reality, business reality for franchised businesses," explains Elizabeth Sigety of Fox Rothschild.
