There are four common mistakes that firms make when picking a practice group leader. Firstly, popularity does not signify a good leader. A successful practice group leader will also be a team player, and is not holding the position to simply further their own agenda. They also need to have a well-communicated plan for the future. Lastly, it is important for practice group leaders to allow for mistakes and not solely look at the numbers.
Stephanie Resnick, the former leader of Fox Rothschild's litigation practice group, says that praise and constructive criticism are very important."I've always felt very strongly that attorneys who work really hard and who achieve victories, whether large or small, should be recognized," she said. "My style was always to reach out and commend those that were putting effort in and doing the right things."
In regards to motivation, she believes that a willingness to lead by example is imperative, and said, "I'm the type of leader that would never ask anyone to do anything I wouldn't do myself." She continued, "If I say: 'You're not working hard enough, you're not doing what we expect you to be doing,' no one can point at me and say 'hypocrite,' because I'm here at 8 a.m. with my sleeves rolled up."
