Data breaches at major retailers and financial institutions have grabbed the headlines this year, but threats are not limited to for-profit entities, according to attorneys.

Even those universities that have not been the victims of major incidents are looking to strengthen policies and procedures and remain proactive, attorneys say.

"Without a doubt, given the pressure that any organization is under to not be a victim, there are a lot of questions."

"It will continue to be a growth area" because regulators are honed in, Vernick added. "It's a lot to keep track of. ...You have a lot of people working overtime in the cyber underworld."
