On the PBS program "Chicago Tonight," attorney Phillip Schreiber discusses an Illinois law that prohibits employers from asking applicants if they have been convicted of a felony on initial job applications. The law, known as "Ban the Box," goes into effect Jan. 1, 2015.

"Essentially it delays when a perspective employer can inquire about a candidate's criminal history, until employer has notified the employee that the employee will be granted an initial interview," Mr. Schreiber said.
