The Mintz Levin Energy & Clean Technology practice group worked on over 45 transactions in 2013 and helped energy and clean technology clients on a wide range of matters, including financing transactions, joint ventures and other arrangements with investors and global corporations from the United States, China, Russia, Europe, India and Japan. We saw some key trends emerging and we are proud to be part of the Clean Edge 2014 Clean Energy Trends Report, released last week. The report highlights trends on the rise and provides a comprehensive glance back at 2013. Some report highlights are below:

  • In 2013, China, Japan, and the United States reached record levels of new solar deployment, leading to double digit growth rates in solar power.  Clean Edge projects that by 2021, global cumulative installed solar PV capacity will reach 715.8 GW, surpassing wind power's projected 697.3 GW in that year.
  • While 2013 experienced a further decline in venture capital as a source of clean-tech funding, the top VC deals encompassed a diverse range of clean-tech sectors including transportation and web-based clean tech.
  • Rather than countries, it was cities and metropolitan areas that really took the lead on energy infrastructure issues in 2013. Policy changes at the municipal level surpassed those on the national level, and cities throughout the world are quickly becoming leaders in the climate change sphere.
