Scott L. Vernick was quoted in the CBS Philly article, "Sands Casino Notifies Bethlehem Customers About Data Breach." Full text can be found in the March 3, 2014, issue, but a synopsis is noted below.

Sands Casino has started notifying customers of its Bethlehem location whose personal information may have been taken in a data breach announced last month.

The casino initially thought its employees were the only target of the breach, but has now admitted that tens of thousands of slot and table game players and others registered at the Bethlehem location could be victims.

"Sands has said the personally identifiable information or the stolen sensitive data relates to social security and driver's license numbers, and that's obviously in combination with customers' first and last names," said Scott L. Vernick, a noted privacy attorney.

The company is sending letters to gamblers offering a free year of credit monitoring, as it works to learn the extent of the breach, but Vernick suggests keeping a close eye on account statements.

"Regrettably, this is the way of the world. But as this incident shows, every company should continue to improve on its ability to be proactive and be as vigilant it can when it comes to issues of data security," he said.
