With hearings set to begin soon, a new settlement session has been scheduled between Public Service Electric & Gas (PSE&G) and opponents of its $2.9 billion gas and electric infrastructure improvement plan.

The case was filed a year ago by PSE&G, in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, which left millions of customers without power, as an attempt to upgrade the grids to prevent such service interruptions in the future.

The state must try to balance how much spending to approve for the state's utilities without spiking the energy bills of consumers.

Steven Goldenberg, an attorney representing companies that use large amounts of energy, said there is a tremendous divide between PSE&G and the ratepayers who would have to "foot the bill for this expensive program."
