Section 937 of the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement and Modernization Act of 2003 ("MMA") requires the Secretary to establish a process for physicians, providers, and suppliers to correct minor errors and omissions in claims without pursuing the formal appeals process. In a Medlearn Matters Article posted to its website, CMS explains that minor corrections can be made with existing procedures. CMS directs providers to the Medicare Claims Processing Manual, CMS Pub. 100-04, located at http://www.cms.hhs.gov/manuals/104_claims/clm104index.asp which contains instructions on how to address minor claims errors and omissions. In the Manual, there is guidance on correcting incomplete or invalid claims and for correcting mistakes in previously processed claims. The article also notes that the Manual provides instructions on how to correct claims through the reopening process and how to correct HIPAA compliance issues. The article can be found at http://www.cms.hhs.gov/medlearn/matters/mmarticles/2004/SE0420.pdf.
