A 1916 congressional charter granted The Boy Scouts of America "the exclusive right to use emblems, badges, descriptive or designating marks, and words and phrases" the group adopts, giving them trademark ownership rights to their name and various other iterations through unusual circumstances.

That mandate has spawned dozens of trademarks for similar terms, including Scoutsoft, a mark registered for the sale of computer software. The registration for Scoutsoft will help the Scouts in their opposition proceedings filed against Automation Tools LLC, which wanted to use "Scoutbook" to sell software for "managing scouting records."
