On June 22, 2004, Richard Scruggs expanded his class action litigation against nonprofit hospitals. After targeting thirteen nonprofit hospitals in eight different states two weeks ago, Scruggs has now extended his assault against tax-exempt hospitals in Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Missouri, and Texas. The litigation alleges that these nonprofit hospitals failed to fulfill their legal obligations to provide government required charity care to indigent and uninsured patients by implementing discriminatory pricing to such patients. Similar cases are expected to be filed in the near future against major hospitals in other states.
