The Federal Trade Commission recently brought suits against LabMD Inc. and TrendNet Inc., accusing the companies of failing to maintain reasonable security standards. The suits show the agency's intent to follow through on policing privacy safeguards despite a hotel chain's challenge to its authority to do so. 

"What the FTC has done here is very consistent with what it perceives to be its enforcement mandate," noted privacy attorney Scott Vernick said. "And I expect it to continue to do this...until someone tells the FTC that it can't do it."
