Under a new U.S. patent law, which took effect in March, ownership of a patent is awarded to the first person to file an application. Patents were formerly given to those who could prove they came up with an invention first. The U.S. was among the last countries in the world to make this change.
Schwartz said that it is too early to tell just how the new law will play out. He also said the transition period from the old rules to the new at this stage will make things more complicated, and it won't be for another 10 or 12 years that we live in a system where only the new rules apply.
"It'll be a little simpler, but I don't know if it'll be much simpler," Schwartz said.
