The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS") announced recently that it is going to launch a pilot program that will result in metrics to measure compliance effectiveness. The program seeks to develop incentives to help Medicare providers follow through on compliance objectives. With academic medical centers and acute-care hospitals that already have compliance plans in place as the focus, the program will run for over 18 months. CMS will limit the program to providers that are located in CMS regions I, II and III (in CT, DE, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, PA, RI, VA, VT, and WV) and whose inpatient revenues account for at least 30% of total revenue and whose Medicare billings are at least 25% of total revenue. Hospitals or academic medical centers that meet these criteria may volunteer for the project by June 25, with the project set to begin in August of this year.
