The deadline for participating in the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations ("JCAHO") field review of potential 2005 patient safety goals is April 30, 2004. The potential safety goals for hospitals include several important changes, including a requirement that hospitals develop a plan for implementing bar code technology for patient identification and matching patients to their medication or other treatments no later than January 1, 2007, as well as three new patient safety goals - reconciling patient medications and treatments across the continuum of care, reducing the risk of patient harm resulting from falls, and reducing the risk of surgical fires. The complete potential 2005 patient safety goals are available at http://www.jcaho.org.
