Diversity and sport is complex territory. The movie 42illustrates a space where sport led, the integration of blacks and whites in broader society. The coming out of Jason Collins illustrates how far behind sport is from much of society. With all of the fanfare there exists an undercurrent of it being about time. But the moment is still one of awareness for all. Collins fits no stereotype. The person we hate, deny rights to or say we don't know may in fact be someone we know very well. United States Supreme Court Justice Earl Warren once famously said, "I always turn to the sports pages first, which records people's accomplishments. The front page has nothing but man's failures." This story fit nicely in both sections. To hear a previous podcast on sport and diversity click HERE
