Today sees the launch of a new Code of Practice on Privacy Notices by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).

The ICO launched a three month long consultation process earlier in the year, complaining that all too many organisations, rather than informing the public, confused them with their gobbledegook and legalistic privacy notices. Following the completion of the consultation process, the ICO hopes that the new Code of Practice will actively encourage all organisations to carry out a review and put in place more user-friendly privacy notices.

A Privacy Notice is the statement you give to the individuals from whom you are collecting information. It should, at a very minimum, advise those individuals of your organisations name (i.e. who you are, what your organisation plans to do with the information you collect and who else you will share that information with). It should be informative and should be able to assist an individual in understanding what it is your organisation is going to do with the information you collect about them. A kind of "who, what, where, when and why"!
