The European Commission has formally withdrawn the proposed Soil
Framework Directive. The Directive, which would have amended
Directive 2004/35/EC, was intended to create a legal framework for
the protection and sustainable management of soil resources.
However, the European Commissioner for the Environment emphasised
in a speech in Brussels on 19 June 2014 that the Commission remains
committed to the objective of soil protection and will examine
options on how to best achieve this.
