30 October 1997

This symposium will deliver original papers on:

* the changing nature of political risk and the design of corporate strategy

What are the principal sources of political risk in the contemporary era? Will new forms of investor vulnerability emerge in the midst of today's climate of privatisation and welcome for foreign companies? How can firms integrate tools and techniques to offset political risk into their international investment strategies? How do rating agencies assess exposure to political risk?

* lessons in the management of political risk from the infrastructure, petroleum and mining industries

What are the principal tools and techniques of political risk management available to investors in private infrastructure projects? In petroleum and mining projects? How can syndicate design and guarantee structure best be used with non-recourse financing, to provide an 'umbrella' of protection against political risk? How can the distribution of stock ownership affect the profile of political risk? What are the lessons from recent projects in Asia, Latin America and the Middle East?

* political risk insurance and multilateral guarantees as a component of international investment strategy

What is the role of international political risk insurance in investor strategy? How do private, national and multilateral insurance and guarantee programs differ, and how can they be integrated by the investor? How much collaboration is now going on between investment insurers? What are the major obstacles to further collaboration? What is the experience of political risk insurers as mediators between investors and governments?

A Control Risks Group consultant will be speaking on the changing nature of political risk and the design of corporate strategy.

This symposium is sponsored under the auspices of the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency of the World Bank Group and the Karl F. Landegger Program in International Business Diplomacy, School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University.
