Background

We are pleased to present the fourth quarterly edition of The Deloitte Consumer Tracker Q2 2012, a forward-looking economic update, focusing on consumer spending attitudes and behaviours based on our proprietary consumer survey and predictive analysis.

Our Tracker provides you with detailed insight into the patterns of consumer spending on a category-by-category basis and looks into the underlying drivers of spending behaviour.

Key findings

  • The Deloitte Consumer Tracker shows consumers have become more positive about spending on discretionary items, a shift that seems to reflect recent sharp falls in inflation.
  • Although still weak, consumer sentiment shows tentative signs of improvement. Consumer sentiment in disposable income remains negative but less so than at any time in the last year.
  • Consumers plan to continue reducing debt and rebuilding balance sheets.
  • A continued downtrend in inflation should provide more support for a still fragile consumer over the coming months.
