A new website devoted to the judiciary of Scotland has been launched this week in an effort to provide the public with better access to information about judges and their roles in Scottish courts. www.scotland-judiciary.org.uk

On launching the new website, the Lord President Lord Hamilton, said: "It is our intention to publish as much information as we can, as quickly as we can. I believe it is vital in a democracy that justice is not only seen to be done, but that it operates in an open and transparent way and contributes to public understanding and awareness of what takes place in courts each day across Scotland."

The website has a number of features to make learning about the judiciary more interesting for members of the public: readers can discover what a typical day in the life of an Inner House (Appeal Court) judge entails, or brush up on their court room etiquette. In addition, summaries of important court decisions and sentencing statements made by judges when passing sentence will be published.

The website marks the beginning of a more modern approach to a democratic judicial system. Visitors to the site can follow updates on Twitter and sign up for RSS feeds to ensure that new items are delivered straight to their desktop.
