Law On Protection of Personal Data No. 6698, which was published on 7 April 2016, had entered into effect at the same date. It was designated however within the Law that some provisions would enter into effect as of 7 October 2016.

The Law, which has adapted many of the provisions within the scope of its content from Directive no. 95/46/EC, designates the procedures and principles pertaining to the processing and transferring of the personal data in a rather detailed manner. At the same time, the Law sets out certain obligations to be complied with by the Data Controllers and Data Processors, along with the administrative and penal sanctions to be imposed in the event of noncompliance therewith.

The provisions set out by the Law for the Data Controllers and Data Processors are capable of affecting a large scale from the internal relations to the commercial activities of the businesses. In this regard, the Law introduces a brand new era for the entities that contact vast amounts of personal data due to their business activities.
