Members of Dentons' Saudi Arabia and UAE practices contributed chapters to the seventh edition of The Employment Law Review, published by London-based Law Business Research.  The book provides an important overview for multinational corporations as they seek to understand and comply with the laws of the various jurisdictions in which they operate.

In this insight partners Amgad Husein and Ibrahim Elsadig as well as associate Nadine Naji provide a comprehensive synopsis of the year in review in addition to an outlook of future developments in Saudi Arabia and the UAE respectively.  The chapters provide insights on topical areas including the basics of:

  • entering an employment relationship;
  • restrictive covenants;
  • wages;
  • foreign workers;
  • global policies;
  • employee representation;
  • translation;
  • data protection;
  • discontinuing employment; and
  • transfer of business.

In Saudi Arabia the hot topic of 2015 was increased attention to workers' rights and the expansion and protection of those rights through various government actions and programmes. In addition, the national policy of encouraging the employment of Saudi nationals in the private sector, known as "Saudisation", remained an influential and controversial topic in 2015.

In the UAE, recent improvements in the global economy and the stabilisation in domestic markets have continued to help the recovery of the country's economy, which has resulted in some improvements in hiring activity and the stability of employment.  New regulations were also issued by the Minister of Labour this year and became effective on 1 January 2016.
