This newsletter summarises recent developments in law relating to resource management and local government in New Zealand that may be of interest to local authorities and decision makers.

In this edition, we briefly discuss a decision of the Environment Court concerning the disqualification of an intended expert witness. We provide a review of matters concerning enforcement, discussing High Court approaches on sentencing and penalties under both the Building Act 2004 and Resource Management Act 1991. We also provide a review of a determination of the Court of Appeal regarding the requirement on local councils and hearing panels to give reasons for their decisions and an overview of recent legislative changes affecting local government decision makers.
