Individuals are entitled to a range of personal allowances varying with age, marital status and number of children and dependants and whether the assessable income was earned or investment income.

For 1996 a single person is entitled to an allowance of £2,600 and a married couple are entitled to £5,200. Earned income relief is available on 25% of earned income up to a maximum of £3,400 for both single persons and married couples, with wife's additional earned income relief of £3,740 and child allowance of £2,200 per child. There are exemption levels of income in Jersey below which no tax is payable to protect lower paid individuals.
