For a long time now various stakeholders of the coal sector is
mulling the proposal of appointing/ setting up an independent and
dedicated regulator for the coal sector in India, for the purpose
of regulating the coal sector, protecting the interest of consumers
and producers of coal and for matter connected therewith.
The Coal Regulatory Authority Bill, 2013 which was approved by
the competent authority on June 27, 2013 was introduced in the Lok
Sabha on December 13, 2013.
However, the Coal Regulatory Authority Bill, 2013 has lapsed
with the dissolution of the 15th Lok Sabha on May 18, 2014 and
therefore re-introduction of the bill for the setting up of the
coal regulatory authority is under consideration for further
inter-ministerial consultations.
