The Ordinance is modelled on the UK Registered Designs Act 1949 as amended by the UK Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 and Part XV 'Short-term Patents' of the Hong Kong Patents Ordinance. The new law will create an autonomous designs registry for Hong Kong, but otherwise will not change the existing regime as significantly as at first expected.
