Dr. Michael Hoffmann-Becking, partner in the law firm Hengeler Mueller, has received Germany's highest civilian award, the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesverdienstkreuz 1. Klasse). The award was conferred on him last Friday in Berlin by Germany's Federal Minister of Justice, Prof. Dr. Herta Däubler-Gmelin.

In presenting the award, Prof. Dr. Däubler-Gmelin paid particular tribute to Dr. Hoffmann-Becking's many years of service as a member of the Board of the German Law Society (Ständige Deputation des Deutschen Juristentages) and chairman of the Committee on Corporate Law of the German Bar Association (Handelsrechtsausschuss des Deutschen Anwaltvereins).

Dr. Hoffmann-Becking, 58, has been one of the outstanding German corporate lawyers for many years and has spearheaded the most significant transactions in recent German economic history. He has been a partner with Hengeler Mueller since 1975, making a valuable contribution to the firm's preeminent position in high-end German and international legal services. The achievements of both Dr. Hoffmann-Becking and Hengeler Mueller have been recognised in the current edition of the renowned legal directory Chambers Global - The Guide to the World's Leading Lawyers - 2001/2002, whose survey of major international companies and banks brought the awards of "Business Lawyer of the Year" and "Business Law Firm of the Year".
