Last Updated: 3 October 2014

Corrs Chambers Westgarth has acted as legal counsel to the operator of Australia's largest public transport project, Sydney's North West Rail Link (NWRL). Corrs' clients MTR Corporation, John Holland and UGL Rail Services are responsible for the operations and maintenance of the latest public private partnership rail infrastructure project, as part of the Northwest Rapid Transit (NRT) Consortium.

The NRT consortium consists of MTR Corporation, John Holland, UGL Rail Services, Leighton Contractors, and Plenary Group, who will deliver the Operations, Trains and Systems (OTS) package, which includes design, build, finance, and then operate a new rapid transit train service.

The NWRL is the first stage of the transformational Sydney Rapid Transit which will deliver a new generation in rapid transit trains.

The Corrs team advising on the operations and maintenance contract for NWRL was led by partner Andrew Chew who was supported by a number of partners and lawyers, including partners Frank Lawson, Stephen Price, Rommel Harding-Farrenberg and Eugenia Kolivos and senior associate Tabitha Winton, who also worked with other law firms Hebert Smith Freehills, Clayton Utz and Ashurst on the complex matter.

Lead partner Andrew Chew said: "We were delighted to have worked alongside our clients on this large and highly complex bid for provision of a very important piece of infrastructure for Sydney and the start of the Sydney Rapid Transit project. The timely and smooth delivery of the project and daily operations is very important. The team at Corrs is very excited about working with MTR Corporation, John Holland and UGL Rail Services and supporting them on the key operations aspect of the project". Construction of the NWRL commences this year and is expected to open in 2019.

The Corrs Projects team have also advised on the recent major PPP rail transportation infrastructure projects across Australia including the government on the Gold Coast Rapid Transit, and one of the consortiums bidding for the Sydney CBD and South East Light Rail PPP.
