United States: Share The Road: Driving EHR Contracts To Good Compromises
Last Updated: September 3 2014

An EHR is not a car. That may sound obvious, but the car metaphor seems to have a reserved parking space in our minds when we negotiate EHR contracts. For example, a health care provider recently told me that an EHR vendor's contract terms were equivalent to buying four wheels, an engine and a frame, but with no guarantee that those pieces will work together as a car. While the car metaphor has its shortcomings, it's a useful tool for discussing key issues in EHR contracts. Steve Blumenthal will use that framework to describe key EHR contract provisions in plain English and explain both vendors' and customers' concerns about those provisions.

  • Understand the concerns of both EHR vendors and EHR customers underlying these key contract provisions
  • Identify appropriate compromises
  • Simplify and shorten the EHR contract negotiation process.
