Australia: Gidget Retro Campers ... a success story: commercialisation of a patented product
Last Updated: 9 July 2014

In our Melbourne office we are focused on the core values that drive our business, culture and the way we deliver service to our clients.

At the heart of everything we do is our passion to innovate.

To look at things from a different perspective.

To challenge the norms.

To take a view and not be afraid to stand by it, and deliver to our clients unique legal solutions that enhance rather than restrict the scope of their own business innovation.

This is why we love it when we have an opportunity to work with other innovators!

Recently, our team had the privilege of advising Australian start up company Gidget Retro Teardrop Camper Pty Ltd in the commercialisation of its patented Gidget Retro Campers into the Australian, Asian and US markets.

The "Gidget" was conceptualised and designed by Brisbane team Christine Bree and Glenn Wills. Their vision was simple: to create an innovative world-leading camper which combines contemporary features and products with the classic aesthetics of the authentic retro teardrop.

After two years spent conceptualising and designing the "Gidget" (including the development of a unique worldwide patented slide out mechanism), and construction of a custom built prototype (which was the star of several cross country road trips and trade exhibitions!!) – the Gidget team looked to Rockwell Olivier to assist them in bringing "Gidget" to the worldwide market.

Our team worked with Christine and Glenn to shape the manufacturing, distribution and ordering strategy for the Gidget, and advised in relation to engagement with the preferred South Korean manufacturer. The Rockwell Olivier team successfully negotiated exclusive manufacturing and distribution arrangements for all "Gidget" models within the Asian market, and implemented contractual arrangements and processes to facilitate the online worldwide ordering and distribution of Gidget Retro Campers.

After recent success at the Brisbane Caravan and Camping Show (where Gidget featured!) there is strong interest from overseas markets and Gidget are ramping up operations to fill orders from several overseas markets in the coming months. The team at Gidget Retro Teardrop Camper Pty Ltd are now well positioned to turn their "big ideas" for Gidget into commercial reality.

Rockwell Olivier takes this opportunity to thank Christine and Glenn for sharing your passion with us, and allowing us to contribute to the first stage of the Gidget journey.
