Bermuda: Jeffrey Kirk Appointed To Lead Appleby's BVI Office
Last Updated: 13 June 2014

Following the retirement of Appleby BVI office managing partner Michael Burns earlier this year, Hong Kong-based partner Jeffrey Kirk has been appointed to assume the leadership of Appleby's BVI office.  Jeffrey and his family will relocate to the BVI from the Hong Kong office, where he has practised corporate and commercial law for the past five years, in early July.

Jeffrey has been with the Appleby Group since 2007, first practising out of our London and subsequently Bermuda offices before moving to the Hong Kong office in 2009.  In addition to being admitted to practice in the BVI, Jeffrey has extensive experience advising on the laws of the Cayman Islands and Bermuda.  His wide-ranging experience will further strengthen Appleby's BVI service offering.

Appleby Group Chairman, Frances Woo, stated: "The BVI is an important jurisdiction for our Asia-based clients. The biggest source of foreign investment into the BVI originates from Hong Kong and it is therefore vital to our clients that we are able to support them in these jurisdictions.  Jeffrey's experience of the wider Asian market will be the perfect grounding in helping us to do this."

Appleby's Hong Kong office is continuing to grow its corporate lawyer base with recruitment efforts currently underway in light of our recent procurement of a licence to offer legal services from our Shanghai office.  A smooth transition of client services in Asia will be supported by Hong Kong-based partners John Melia and Judy Lee, who have been with the Group for 8 and 14 years respectively.  John practises both BVI and Isle of Man corporate and commercial law, with extensive experience dealing with mergers and acquisitions, listings, private equity transactions, banking and finance matters.  Judy practises a wide range of Bermuda, Cayman and BVI corporate and commercial law, specialising in corporate finance and investment funds.
