Hong Kong: Mallesons Stephen Jaques Tops in Construction
Last Updated: 14 November 2002

Mallesons Stephen Jaques’ Hong Kong centre has been nominated as the leader in the area of Construction law with its recent win in the Asian Legal Business Awards.

The annual awards acknowledge expertise in several categories of law.

Mallesons’ Asia Pacific Construction practice has enjoyed considerable success for many years under the leadership of David Bateson and Paul Starr.

Recently the firm expanded this area of practice and renamed it - Projects and Construction - with a strong team of partners on-the-ground in Hong Kong to service the growing regional needs of clients.

Partners Jennifer Lee-Shoy, Damian McNair, Graham Thomson and Christopher Tung are all key members of the projects and construction team who provide legal advice on all aspects of major building, engineering and infrastructure projects, in all industry sectors. The team’s use of applied legal technology enables clients to plan and manage the complexities of major projects.

The recent relocation from Australia of Energy and Projects partner Robert Milliner, has enabled the team, regarded as one of the largest groups of dedicated projects and construction lawyers in Asia, to broaden its expertise.

"This award is recognition that Mallesons continues to remain at the forefront of major infrastructure projects throughout Asia. With a pre-eminent track record and reputation built up over two decades, our large team is well equipped to handle all legal work associated with projects, both front-end and back-end, including financing," said David Bateson.

Paul Starr adds: "Our clients are comfortable with the fact that, not only have our principal partners been here for the long term, but so have the majority of our lawyers and staff. They value our loyalty, team spirit and high morale. Each lawyer and staff member contributes to that Mallesons’ approach."

The growth of the Mallesons’ regional Projects and Construction practice and, the firm’s expanded Hong Kong presence six months ago, was in response to increasing regional demands from clients for the provision of a full-service commercial law firm capability out of Hong Kong.
