HOUSTON, TEXAS The Petroleum Economist again ranks Vinson & Elkins first for "best knowledge of the oil and gas sector" in its annual Energy Finance Poll. The leading international energy journal surveyed senior executives within the world’s leading energy companies.

"The energy industry is a core part of our business at Vinson & Elkins and the Petroleum Economist’s ranking as the top international firm in the oil and gas sector reaffirms our widespread recognition as the world’s leading energy law firm," says Joe Dilg, managing partner for Vinson & Elkins.

The Petroleum Economist interviewed 335 executives in Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia, Europe and the Middle East. 36% of the respondents were in senior management, 24% in finance, 32% were in-house legal managers and 8% were commercial and business development managers. The survey was published in the June 2002 issue.

In addition to the broad oil and gas sector #1 ranking, Vinson & Elkins ranks among the top six law firms in the world in each of the following categories:

  • best knowledge of U.S. law
  • best knowledge of project and structured finance
  • best knowledge of energy law and transactions in South America
  • best knowledge of energy law and transactions in the CIS
  • best knowledge of energy law and transactions in Africa
  • best service in mergers, acquisitions, and divestments

"Vinson & Elkins continues to represent the leading energy companies in the industry on their most challenging and important projects throughout the world," says Bruce Bilger, co-head of the Business & International section for Vinson & Elkins. "These include cross-border M&A deals such as Duke Energy’s $8 billion acquisition of Westcoast Energy in Canada, LNG projects such as Shell’s Hazira project in India, and the very active Master Limited Partnership financings where our lawyers have represented either the issuer or the underwriter in virtually all of the MLPs formed since 1986."
