Australia: 2013 Auslsa Report Highlights Legal Sector's Efforts To Reduce Carbon Footprint
Last Updated: 18 November 2013

Sydney, 12 November 2013: Clayton Utz continued to reduce our impact on the environment over the last 12 months, recording significant cuts in electricity usage and paper consumption across our offices.

The Australian Legal Sector Alliance's (AusLSA) annual report for 2013, launched last night at our 1 Bligh 6 green star rated Sydney offices, notes a reduction in our Firm's energy consumption by 531 tonnes and our overall emissions by 1,295 tonnes in the last year. We also reduced our paper consumption by 18 per cent, a significant improvement on last year.

Clayton Utz partner and AusLSA board member Stuart Clark said Clayton Utz employed environmentally friendly workplace practices where possible and continued to focus on raising awareness among employees on the part they can play in helping to lighten the Firm's carbon footprint.

"Since signing up in 2010 to report to AusLSA on our environmental impacts, we've reduced our overall level of carbon emissions by almost 20 per cent, which is encouraging," said Mr Clark. "We've found it valuable to work collaboratively with other AusLSA member firms to help us identify best practice approaches to sustainability that we can apply in the Clayton Utz environment. We're also continually looking at new ways we can engage our people in supporting and promoting environmentally friendly workplace practices."

Clayton Utz is a founding member firm of AusLSA, and one of 45 member firms, representing nearly 20 percent of all Australian lawyers in private practice. Based on the UK Legal Sector Alliance, AusLSA aims to develop best practice sustainability guidelines for the legal sector to help firms achieve measurable targets in reducing their environmental impacts.
