United States: Kilpatrick Townsend’s Steve Berlin Appointed To The University Of North Carolina School Of Arts Board Of Trustees

WINSTON-SALEM (September 27)Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton announced today that Steve Berlin has been appointed by Governor Pat McCrory to the University of North Carolina School of Arts (UNCSA) Board of Trustees.  Mr. Berlin's term will begin immediately and will expire June 30, 2017.

The UNCSA Board of Trustees is composed of 27 distinguished citizens, with eight members elected by the UNC Board of Governors and four appointed by the Governor.  The membership also includes a representative of the North Carolina Symphony, the Secretary of the Department of Cultural Resources, the President of the UNCSA Student Government Association, an Alumni Representative, two emeritus members, liaisons from UNCSA's Foundation Board and Board of Visitors, and seven honorary members.

The Board of Trustees advises the Chancellor on the management and development of the UNC School of the Arts, helps the School serve the people of the State, and assists the School in performing at a high level of excellence.  The Board also serves as adviser to the UNC Board of Governors. The Board of Trustees meets five times a year.

Mr. Berlin, who is managing partner of Kilpatrick Townsend's Winston-Salem office, has significant experience in several areas of environmental law, including environmental litigation, business transactions involving environmental issues and environmental compliance matters. Since joining the firm more than 25 years ago, he has worked in most areas of environmental litigation, both in federal and state courts with an emphasis on private environmental costs recovery actions and representations of potentially responsible parties at Superfund sites and RCRA issues.  Mr. Berlin has handled matters both at the trial and appellate levels in both federal and state courts.  He has handled numerous matters involving plaintiff's claims of injury caused by contamination.

Mr. Berlin was recognized in The Best Lawyers in America® for Environmental Law in 2014 and the six years immediately preceding.  He has also been named to the 2013 and the four years immediately preceding editions of Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business and listed as one of Business North Carolina's 2010, 2012 and 2013 "Legal Elite."  Mr. Berlin was recognized among the Triad's "Most Influential" professional executives for 2010, 2011 and 2012 by the Triad Business Journal.  He has also been named a North Carolina "Super Lawyer" by SuperLawyers magazine for Environmental Litigation and Land Use/Zoning in 2010 and Environmental Law in 2010, 2012 and 2013.  Mr. Berlin was listed in The International Who's Who of Business Lawyers for 2010 and 2011 and is AV® rated by Martindale-Hubbell.

Mr. Berlin currently serves as the Chair of The Board of Winston-Salem Business, Inc., which is the only local agency that conducts external economic development marketing to promote Winston-Salem and Forsyth County as an excellent business location.  He also is the Chair Elect of the Arts Council of Winston-Salem.  Mr. Berlin is a member of the Wake Forest Law School Board of visitors and a Master of the Bench in its Inn of Court.

Mr. Berlin was an adjunct professor at Wake Forest Law School for 12 years and coached its very successful National Trial Team.  He has also served on the United Way Board, the Children's Museum Board (where Mr. Berlin was a founding board member and chaired its Development Committee.)  He is Past Chair of the Winston-Salem Enrichment Center Board and Past President of the Forsyth County Bar Association.
