Australia: Norton Rose Fulbright picks up Deal of the Year award at Lloyd’s List Global Awards 2013
Last Updated: 17 October 2013

Global legal practice Norton Rose Fulbright has been awarded Deal of the Year at the Lloyd's List Global Awards 2013 at a ceremony held in the Lancaster Hotel, London, on October 1, 2013.

A panel of judges drawn from the shipping sector named the combination of Norton Rose and leading US law firm Fulbright & Jaworski to form Norton Rose Fulbright as Deal of the Year. As a result of the combination, Norton Rose Fulbright is now one of the only truly global full service shipping practices able to provide advice to the international shipping sector, which it serves throughout Europe, the United States, Canada, Latin America, Asia, Australia, Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia.

The combination has also resulted in the establishment of a leading New York shipping practice, providing Norton Rose Fulbright's global clients with increased access to new sources of ship finance such as US based private equity and debt capital markets funding.

Harry Theochari, global head of transport, Norton Rose Fulbright, commented:

"In a period of significant economic upheaval for the shipping industry, we remain fully committed to the sector and are delighted that the continued growth of our practice has been recognised with this award."

"The availability of finance continues to be a key issue for the shipping sector. Our presence in the US is allowing us to assist our global clients in gaining greater access to new sources of ship finance predominately based in the States, enabling them to benefit from the broadest mix of investment and capital sources."

"As one of the world's major oil producers the US is also a key market for our oil and gas and offshore clients, and is a market that is likely to remain key for the shipping sector as the US looks set to become a net exporter of oil and gas in the future."

The combination of Norton Rose and Fulbright & Jaworski, which completed on June 3 2013, is one of the largest in the history of the legal profession. Norton Rose Fulbright has close to 3,800 lawyers, making it one of the world's top 10 legal practices by number of lawyers, as well as by gross revenue.

Through the combination, Norton Rose Fulbright has significantly enhanced depth and breadth of resources across its key industry sector strengths: Financial institutions; Energy; Infrastructure, mining and commodities; Technology and innovation; Transport; and Life sciences and healthcare.
