Australia: On the road again: the 2013 Future2 Wheel Classic
Last Updated: 16 October 2013

If you've ever met Peter Bobbin, you'll know he's what might politely be termed a cycling enthusiast. The managing principal of law firm Rockwell Olivier's Sydney office, Bobbin has been riding to and from work on a regular basis for many years. Most of the Sydney team has, at one time or another, spotted him striding through the corridors half in lycra, half in business wear, already at work as he gives advice by phone.

What you might not know is that Bobbin is one of the founding trustees of Future2, the charity foundation of the Australian Financial Planning Association. Having its roots in the financial planning industry, Future2 is uniquely placed to offer assistance to people and communities in need. The foundation provides assistance through financial grants to charities and not-for-profit organisations, and supports young individuals who suffer from social and financial disadvantages. It's a "hand up", rather than a "hand out" approach, bolstered by fundraisers, awareness campaigns and pro bono work provided by the financial planning industry across the country.

Every year, Future2 stages the Wheel Classic, a marathon bike ride from Melbourne to Sydney. Taking place over nine days, the event allows for individual or team participation, over the whole course or a single leg of the trip. Once registered, participants are required to raise a minimum of $500 for the foundation. The gruelling 1200km ride isn't for the faint of heart; the first leg from Melbourne to Bendigo is in the neighbourhood of 150km, and riders need to sign a waiver before strapping on a helmet.

Bobbin has ridden in every Future2 Wheel Classic since 2010. He takes both his cycling and his trustee duties seriously, so the Wheel Classic is the perfect amalgam of work and play. This year, the marathon begins on Saturday 5 October, and his colleagues at Rockwell Olivier are keen to see Bobbin make this his best ride yet.
