Australia: Norton Rose Fulbright acts in multi-billion dollar Myanmar telecoms rollout
Last Updated: 9 August 2013

Norton Rose Fulbright has been appointed as lead international counsel to support Ooredoo (formerly Qatar Telecom) in the greenfields deployment of a multi-billion dollar mobile telecoms network in Myanmar (Burma). The project is one of the leading telecoms projects in the world at present.

Ooredoo is one of only two foreign telecoms companies recently awarded a new Nationwide Telecommunications Licence in Myanmar as the country accelerates its development and liberalisation plans.

The team is being jointly led by Gigi Cheah, Partner in our Singapore office and Dr Martyn Taylor, Partner in our Sydney office.

Dr Martyn Taylor, Partner at Norton Rose Fulbright commented:

"We congratulate Ooredoo on winning a Myanmar nationwide telecoms licence. The selection process was fiercely contested, attracting some 91 expressions of interest. Myanmar has huge economic potential and the rollout of advanced mobile services will have a dramatic socio-economic impact."

Gigi Cheah, Partner at Norton Rose Fulbright commented:

"We are delighted to be supporting Ooredoo on this exciting project. The considerable corporate social responsibility initiatives, which will be rolled out by Ooredoo will benefit Myanmar and its people – these include e-health and mobile education programs and mobile payment services."

Ooredoo has been one of the fastest growing telecoms groups in the world over the last 6 years and currently operates in some 14 countries across South-East Asia, the Middle East and North Africa. Myanmar will likely become Ooredoo's second largest operation behind Indosat in Indonesia.
