MENLO PARK (June 10) -- Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton announced today that it has named Mark Barrish the new managing partner of the firm's Silicon Valley office. Mr. Barrish succeeds Bill Shaffer who served as the Silicon Valley Office Managing Partner for two years. Mr. Shaffer will be relocating to Kilpatrick Townsend's San Diego office this summer. He will continue his practice focusing on patent prosecution and counseling as a member of the firm's internationally recognized Intellectual Property Department working with clients in both Silicon Valley and Southern California.

"It is an honor to be leading one of Kilpatrick Townsend's largest offices, said Mark Barrish, Silicon Valley Office Managing Partner. "Having been with the firm for more than 18 years, I have seen its footprint grow internationally and I look forward to continuing to expand our services here in Silicon Valley. I also want to take this opportunity to thank Bill for his outstanding leadership over the years."

Mr. Barrish co-leads the firm's Medical & Surgical Devices industry area, and focuses his practice on patent prosecution and counseling. His experience includes developing patent portfolios for growing companies, primarily in the medical device field. In addition to patent prosecution, Mr. Barrish provides strategic patent counseling, including identifying, reviewing, and contesting competitor's patents.

Mr. Barrish has significant due diligence experience, including representing clients before potential corporate investors, reviewing intellectual property for potential investment, representing clients throughout the Initial Public Offering process, evaluation of potential mergers, and participating in successful discussions with venture capitalists. His current practice includes opinion work, licensing, and representing clients before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

In 2011 and 2012, Mr. Barrish was recommended by Legal 500 US in the area of Patent Prosecution. In 2012, he was selected as a "Life Science Star" in the inaugural edition of LMG Life Sciences.

Mr. Barrish graduated from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law and the University of California, Santa Barbara where he earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, with honors.
