James & Wells Intellectual Property last night added the National Sustainable Business Network Medium Business (Trailblazer) Award to its trophy cabinet.

The specialist IP firm took the top spot over the other regional category winner and finalist, Sharp Tudhope Lawyers.

Senior associate Jonathan Lucas says this award recognises at a national level James & Wells' ongoing commitment to sustainable business.

"On top of our culture of clever thinking, this acknowledgement will help spur us on to achieve even greater heights of corporate responsibility," says Mr Lucas.

James & Wells Intellectual Property was the first IP law firm in the world to achieve CEMARS® organisation certification, meaning the company measures and manages its greenhouse gas emissions.

New technology and the ongoing development of online tools and services have led to measurable cost savings, a move towards paperless offices, and the ability for the firm's staff to work remotely from anywhere, anytime.

James & Wells also sponsors Kiwi charity Sustainable Coastlines, with staff taking part in beach cleanup days and the firm donating five per cent of professional fees from clients who belong to the Sustainable Business Network, Sustainable Business Council, or who have CEMARS® certification, to the charity.

"James & Wells' Sustainable Business Committee helps drive and champion our sustainability initiatives and I am sure this award will help inspire the team to continue their efforts," says Mr Lucas.

The NZI National Sustainable Business Network Awards were held last night in Auckland, with finalists made up of winners of the regional Sustainable Business Network awards.
