Australia: Middletons gears up for the ISAF Sailing World Championships at the Opening Ceremony in Perth
Last Updated: 6 December 2011

Middletons is a proud gold sponsor and the exclusive legal services provider to Perth 2011 Sailing World Championships. Competition starts on Saturday 3 December, however the real party starts on Friday 2 December with the lunchtime Opening Ceremony commencing at 12.15 pm in Forrest Place in the Perth CBD. The athletes will take part in a parade through the city after arriving by ferry at Barrack Square on Perth's Swan River foreshore.

The Opening Ceremony will be attended by the Premier of Western Australia, together with the President of ISAF and ISAF senior officials as well as board members of Perth 2011.

Middletons national managing partner, Nick Nichola said, "Middletons, like the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships, has a true national presence with a global reach. Much like the way in which our lawyers service clients, the Perth 2011 Event embodies Middletons' values in showcasing innovation in world sailing which engages and challenges these athletes."

Middletons will take part in an intimate cocktail function aboard the HMB Endeavour replica ship. Guests will hear from key note speaker, David Murray AO (Chair) of the Future Fund and will have the rare opportunity to tour the ship. The HMB Endeavour is currently circumnavigating Australia to promote the championships.

Following the Opening Ceremony a convoy of boats representing the history and heritage of each of the yacht clubs along the river will be part of a Parade of Sail that will carry the ISAF Worlds Flag down the Swan River from Perth to Fremantle. Commencing with the 100-year-old Mercedes and ending with the beautifully restored 9-metre Acrospire, the fleet will tell the story of sailing in Western Australia over the years.

The Flag will finally be met in the Inner Harbour by a fleet representing the 10 Olympic sailing events that will compete at the Perth 2011 ISAF Worlds.

The current world Champions in the Men's and Women's RS:X, Piotr Myszka (POL) and Blanca Manchon (ESP) will bring the flag ashore and hand it to 2008 Olympic Games gold medallist Elise Rechichi (AUS) who will carry it across the beach to the Fremantle Roundhouse to be hoisted as the sun sets over the Indian Ocean.

The Championships is expected to be three times the size of the 1987 America's Cup Defence held in Fremantle, and will include 1,200 athletes, 850 yachts, 120 race management boats and 80 nations. The event is the key qualifying event for the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic games.
