New Zealand: First New Zealand attorney to be named as one of the world's leading strategist by IAM
Last Updated: 27 June 2011

A enviable reputation for helping New Zealand companies protect their intellectual property has seen James & Wells attorney Kate Wilson attain the ultimate accolade – the first Kiwi to be named among the world's top 250 IP strategists.

Kate is the only NZ based patent attorney among the elite names in IAM Strategy 250: the World's Leading IP Strategists, announced by Intellectual Asset Management in London this week.

Kate says after more than two decades helping New Zealand companies such as Gallagher Group and Bomac Laboratories gain a competitive edge by thinking strategically, she is immensely proud to be among the world's best.

"It's probably fair to say I have been almost evangelistic in trying to get our businesses to think strategically about their most valuable asset, their intellectual property.

"While some converts have understood, and benefited significantly, I am still frustrated by the pedestrian approach applied by many businesses and to a degree some of their business advisors."

Kate says the IAM Strategy 250 - published this year for the fourth time - is recognised as the pre-eminent reference source for those seeking world-class strategic advice on IP.

"For there to be a global list that recognises the speciality of providing strategic IP advice integrated with business goals gives some validation to my crusade.

I encourage New Zealand companies to work with IP strategists, take time to really think about how use their major assets to compete, leverage deals, generate multiple revenue streams and build sustainable businesses."

The compilers of the top 250 spent five months investigating the credentials of strategists nominated by their peers, including speaking to their clients.

"Making the top 250 suggests our clients could articulate the real benefits of having strategic IP advice, and its pleasing to have been able to contribute to that," says Kate.

Kate is flying out this month to the 2011 Intellectual Property Business Congress in San Francisco, where the IAM Strategy 250 publication will be released. Attendees will hear about the latest IP strategies, using real-life examples from global business giants such as Phillips, Intel, Nokia, twitter, Microsoft, and Ford.

"It will be great to again meet and learn more about the craft from top strategists outside of our firm and New Zealand," says Kate.
