Australia: Middletons adds more energy and resources to its growing national practice
Last Updated: 11 April 2011

Fiona Melville, formerly a partner at Johnson Winter & Slattery, has been appointed to the Middletons partnership in Sydney. Fiona has specialised in energy and resources law for the last 14 years and is a leader in the development of trading electricity, gas, carbon and environmental products.

Middletons national managing partner, Nick Nichola said, "Fiona is one of Australia's leading advisers to participants in the electricity and gas sectors. Fiona is called upon for her expertise in major project developments, electricity and gas wholesale and retail trading and greenhouse gas reporting."

"Fiona is the first port of call for companies seeking advice in dealing in environmental products such as carbon permits and renewable energy certificates and is well across energy regulatory issues." said Nick.

Fiona was named in the Australian Legal Business top 40 Energy & Resources lawyers in 2008 and in the Energy & Resources Section of Doyle's Guide to the Australian Legal Profession in 2009.

Middletons new partner, Fiona Melville said, "Middletons' growth has been exceptional in the past few years and with a strong presence in Western Australia, particularly in the energy and resources sector, the firm was a fantastic fit for my area of specialty. I certainly feel welcome and part of the team here at Middletons."

Fiona's experience includes:

  • advising Macquarie Generation in relation to proposed projects for the generation of electricity in the Hunter Valley from coal seam methane
  • advising GridX Power in relation to distributed generation at commercial and residential sites, including the supply of electricity and thermal energy to Qantas at the domestic and jet base terminals at Sydney Airport
  • preparing carbon trading contracts for AFMA, AGL and Macquarie Capital, and environmental product contracts for electricity retailers including Integral Energy, Infigen and CS Energy
  • advising electricity retailers and generators (including CS Energy, Aurora and Integral Energy) on wholesale electricity trading contracts, financial services regulatory requirements and network support arrangements
  • advising Onesteel, Energy Developments and CSR on the national short term gas trading market and long term gas supply contracts.
