China: Shanghai Pudong New Area IP Administration Delegation Visit To Munich
Last Updated: 4 October 2017

Last week, Haseltine Lake Partners, Daniel Chew (London office) and Robert Margue (Munich office), as well as Haseltine Lake's Chief Representative of the China Office, Li Min (Ellie) joined the Shanghai Pudong New Area IP Administration delegation visit to the German Patent and Trade Mark Office (DPMA) and the European Patent Office (EPO) in Munich. The day was designed for the Chinese delegation, as part of their visit to Europe, to learn about Germany's IP processes and to help to bridge the relationship between IP offices in China and in Europe.

Over the course of the morning, Daniel, Robi and Ellie met with the Chinese delegation at the DPMA. The participants were welcomed by Herbert Krüger, Head of Legal Division and International Relations, followed by Dr Renate Ottmann, Head of Legal Division and International Relations, who delivered a talk on "Duties and organisation of the DPMA". Later, Dr Volker Rüger, an International Cooperation, Senior Patent Examiner, discussed "Patent examination procedure at the DPMA" with the group.

While visiting the EPO later that day, the team were welcomed by François-Régis Hannart, Principal Director of the European and International Cooperation, and Beatriz Blas, Country Coordinator China, International Cooperation who gave an update on recent developments at the EPO, followed by a talk on "Routes to file a patent in Europe, and how to accelerate the procedure at the EPO" from Laura Smith-Hewitt, IP5 Project and DG1 External Relations Coordinator, Patent Procedures Management. The session was closed by Paola Giancane, a lawyer, who discussed "The EPO and the PCT services for the Chinese industry."

Daniel, Robi and Ellie participated actively in the discussions and also provided their views, as private practitioners, on some of the procedures at the EPO which have improved in the recent years, as well as how they could be further improved for the benefit of patent applicants.

The visit was concluded with a dinner hosted by Haseltine Lake for the Chinese delegation at the Pfistermühle Bavarian restaurant.

It had been an incredibly informative and valuable trip for the Chinese delegation who will share their learnings with IP professionals in Chinese companies and IP firms, on their return to Shanghai, in order to encourage increased IP filings in Europe.
