Australia: Clayton Utz hosts 9th annual International Arbitration Lecture
Last Updated: 21 November 2010

Sydney, 18 November 2010: Clayton Utz, supported by the University of Sydney, has hosted the 9th annual International Arbitration lecture at the Supreme Court of New South Wales.

Eminent international arbitrator, mediator and lawyer Sally Harpole delivered this year's lecture, in which she highlighted the development of an emerging arbitration culture in the Asia-Pacific. Ms Harpole also shared her perspective on the approach of language in Asian arbitration and the preference for institutional over ad hoc arbitration in China.

The event attracted several leading members of Sydney's legal and business communities, including members of the judiciary, legal practitioners, academics, corporate multinationals and organisations with foreign interests, and law students.

The national head of Clayton Utz's International Arbitration practice and President of The Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (ACICA), Professor Doug Jones AM, said the annual International Arbitration lecture remained a signature event in the global International Arbitration calendar and reflected Australia's pre-eminence in leading debate and thought leadership in this area.

"The annual International Arbitration lecture continues to play an important role in promoting and supporting the development and study of international arbitration and international dispute resolution in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. For some years now Clayton Utz, in conjunction with organisations such as ACICA, has been at the forefront of efforts to promote Sydney ― and Australia ― as an attractive destination for international arbitration. Ms Harpole's insights into the rise of an arbitration culture in the Asia-Pacific underlines the importance of such efforts," said Professor Jones.
